Silver Hill thrillers

Winston “Charles Mcenroe” Griffith and Terry “The Puncher” Dottin put on a show of exceptional skill and entertainment when the Silver Hill Road Tennis Championship continued on Sunday night.

Griffith, the former national champion, seemed down and out after the attacking Dottin seized the first game and surged from 18-20 in the second with two breathtaking smashes to lock the scores, while striking a pose.

However, with the supporting crew from Barbarees Hill informing Griffith that “something” had been added to the pot, Griffith, with his nimble footwork and tai chi hand movements went on to thrill the crowd and defeat Dottin 19-21, 22-20, 21-14.

Only one other match in the Open category went beyond straight sets on a night when players noted for their sartorial splendour matched their game with their tennis outfits. Trevor Callender handed Romell “Cut Lee” Forde a 21-13, 12-21, 21-16 loss.

King of dress, Aaron Barker, was the most impressive as he beat Anderson “Chef Andy” Smith 21-7, 21-15. Gary “Kojak” Thomas won the all-Christ Church battle from Simon Bayne 21-18, 21-16.

The flashy Dario Hinds disposed of Dwayne Hope 21-16, 21-13 to earn the dubious pleasure of battling Antonio “Lil Man” Daniel on Thursday. Shawn “Schwarzenegger” Spencer eliminated Richard “Danny Boy” King 21-13, 21-10.

The grim Julian “Snake” Quimby closed out the night by defeating Julian “Ju-Ju” Collymore 21-14, 21-19.

The opening in-house matches had seen Adrian “Howlie” Walker beating Anderson Smith 21-12, 23-21; Nicolas “Nik-Nik” Ellis stopping Neil Franklyn 21-16, 21-13, and Karyan Jordan defeating Mosia Williams 22-20, 21-15.

Tonight, not even rain may be able to cool the Silver Hill court as the likes of Julian “Michael Jackson” White, Curtis Jones and Emar Edwards will join the fray, with Barker, Thomas, Davian “Force Ripe” Taylor, Jamar “Bob” Best and Lloyd “Dick Man” Burke also appearing on the card. (KB)
