The West Indies held off collapse until the last 40 minutes of the day’s play, as Australia put their noses in front this second Digicel Test match.
Unable to get more than one wicket in the first two sessions of another abbreviated day’s action at the Queen’s Park Oval, Australia grabbed five for a mere 19 runs in 12 overs to leave West Indies 252 for nine heading into the fourth instalment of the match, still 59 runs adrift of the visitors’ first innings score of 311.
It was a case of Nathan taking the “Lyon’s” share.
The off-spinner, tamed by the Windies’ “Tiger,” Shivnarine Chanderpaul for much of the day, roared back in his last nine overs to snatch his second five-wicket haul in 12 Tests and turn the game around.
A cautiously content Oval crowd was reduced to discontented grumbling after Lyon (29-9-68-5) took five wickets for 19 runs in the gentle afternoon sunshine.
Chanderpaul (94), Narsingh Deonarine (55), skipper Darren Sammy (one), Shane Shillingford (four) and Kemar Roach (zero) disappeared as fast as the opposition in a Usain Bolt race, to undermine the diligent work done earlier.
