A go for Run Barbados Series

There’s no running away from it. Run Barbados 2014 is definitely on.

The 2014 series is on schedule to come off on the weekend starting Friday, December 5.

The announcement yesterday came after weeks of speculation about the 2014 series, which has been launched noticeably later than usual due to the dissolution of the Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA) and its replacement with the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) and the Barbados Tourism Product Authority (BTPA).

Speaking to this yesterday was the BTMI’s new CEO William Griffith, who confirmed that BTMI was taking the baton from the BTA to put on the series.

“A decision was made that the BTMI would take responsibility for the Run Barbados events and brand. So, we are moving forward with the goal to preserve and improve relationships with existing partners while steadily surpassing expectations of runners for years to come.

“This year, we have moved the event’s planning and operations out-of-house in hopes of improving the runners’ experience at all points of interaction before and during race weekend.

“For 2014, we have named June Rudder as the official race coordinator, who brings 25 years of planning road races with her. We also have TicketPal onboard to provide more efficient logistical support with online and offline registrations.”

The CEO expects that there will be significant improvements and changes in the entire business model and branding of this long-standing event in 2015, and alluded to a very special event in the 50th Independence anniversary celebration year of 2016.

Griffith also thanked all of the Run Barbados participants who took time to reach out to the BTMI for updates on the 2014 series before the official announcement.

This year’s events will start with the Fun Mile (Friday, December 5) in St Lawrence Gap, and continue with the 3K and 10K races (Saturday, December 6) starting from the Bay Street Esplanade.

The 2014 series will culminate with the 5K and half marathon on Sunday, December 7, both of which will also be starting from the Esplanade.

School students and corporate Barbados are once again urged to come out for the Schools’ Challenge and the Digicel CEO Challenge.

In addition, the Barbados Challenge will again be featured, with participants receiving medals for their participation.

Registration starts online from tomorrow at Box offices will be announced shortly for offline registrants. (BA/PR)
