No funds for FIBA plan

THE NEW WORLD CUP qualification process doesn’t seem to be adding up for the Caribbean.

Basketball’s governing body, FIBA, may have to go back to the drawing board where proposed regional competition is concerned after the Caribbean Basketball Confederation’s (CBC) member bodies agreed the new home-and-away system isn’t financially viable for this area.

It was the biggest development coming out of the just-concluded CBC congress here in Barbados, where recently-elected president Glyne Clarke chaired his first ever meeting of regional federations.

“At this present point in time it would seem that none of the federations in Caribbean have that type of financial wherewithal to fund travelling to a country for one game and then returning to host one country again for a single game under that arrangement,” reasoned Barbados Amateur Basketball Association president Derrick Garrett.
