Bayville residents vote for peace

THE COMMUNITY of Bayville took to the streets last Saturday to vote for peace.

Bearing placards with messages such as We Need A Change, Together We Will Build And Grow, Make Love Not War and One Community, One Family, One love, scores of white-clad people walked from the headquarters of the National Union of Public Workers in Dalkeith, to Bayville’s playing field, in an event conceptualised by Barbados Labour Party candidate for the area Kirk Humphrey.

Humphrey, who was supported by fellow candidates William Duguid, Lieutenant Colonel(retired) Jeffrey Bostic and Marsha Caddle, said the Community Unity March And Rally was his response to an upsurge of violence in the Bayland and to last month’s murder of resident Kesmar Codrington.

“So because I grow up in the Pine, I also understood we have these violence spikes. It pops up in different communities and so the march was really to call it out, to call it by its name – violence – and we have to put an end to it,” he explained.

However, he added the rally was also to highlight the more positive aspects of the community.

“The Bayland traditionally had such a great reputation for sports and for culture, so we just need to get back to our roots and today is the starting point,” Humphrey said.

The march climaxed with a concert at the Bayland playing field. (HLE)
