Barbados’ best female players Hannah Chambers and Gabrielle Leslie held centre court at the National Tennis Centre, Wildey for two hours and 27 gripping minutes while battling to win the ICBL Senior Tennis Open on Sunday.

With just one year separating The St Michael School student Chambers, 16, and the United States-based Leslie, 17, not even the large crowd could predict any obvious tennis advantage before Chambers took the match 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.

“I started out a bit nervous but I know how to get rid of the nerves, which I did and I just kept on pushing through. She started breaking down towards the end of the first set and I took advantage of that,” Chambers said in an interview after the final.

“Gabby took a lead in the first set, but I was not worried even though she had beaten me the last three times. That was last year and I had worked really hard on my game, so I thought that I would have the advantage even though she was at a tennis academy,” Chambers said. (KB)
