Another Deacons, Progressive final face-off

The longest local volleyball rivalry continues tonight when Barbados Bearings Progressive and Deacons clash in the final of the Goddard Enterprises Limited Senior Knockouts at the Wildey Gymnasium at 7:30.

That game will be preceded by the women’s final with Deacons opposing the defending league queens UWI Blackbirds at 5:30 p.m.

Both Progressive and Deacons, as founding members of the Barbados Volleyball Association, began their clashes in 1976. After becoming early champions, Deacons gave way to Progressive in the 1980s before Deacons reigned supreme in the 1990s. Deacons women were among the first female teams taking part in their league in 1980.

Deacons’ men are not just defending the title, but an unblemished status, having romped through the preliminaries and the semi-finals without dropping a set. (KB)
