Volleyball league queens the University of the West Indies Blackbirds won their second Goddard Enterprises Limited senior knockout title by defeating Deacons 23-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-22 in an exciting final on Sunday night at the Wildey Gymnasium.

Except for a blip in the semi-finals, where they faced elimination in the fourth set down game and match point 22-24 against Burger King Clapham Toners, the Blackbirds were almost flawless in flying through the preliminary games without losing a set.

However, losing a close opening set to Deacons stirred memories of last year’s knockout finals which UWI lost in straight sets to Chargers.

UWI’s trio of captain Dania Hamilton, Tenielle Chapman-Goodluck and the high jumping Shakera Hall, along with setter Afyia Taylor, then took control of the game to repeat their triumph from 2017. (KB)
