Barbadian Abigail Johnson is on the way to the Global Peace Summit hosted by The Global Peace Chain in Istanbul, Turkey.

The Global Peace Summit aims to build resilience and cultivate the culture of tolerance and inclusivity by empowering Global Peace Ambassadors. This year’s topic is Reshaping Youth Response to UNSDGs (the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals).

Johnson, who is an Independent Senator in the Barbados National Youth Parliament, came across the application online and decided to sign up hours before the deadline.

“I am excited. I am not just looking forward to the summit on the whole, but moreso what I can bring from it back to Barbados,” she said.

The 19-year-old medical student at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies was initially accepted as self-funded, but her status was changed to partially funding and she sought donations to offset the costs.

Johnson is active on issues affecting the youth and is an advocate for the Barbados Childhood Obesity Prevention Coalition and a Healthy and Environment Friendly Youth ambassador for Barbados. She is passionate about the development of Barbadian youth and the inclusion of youth in decision-making spaces, where they are not only given a seat at the table, but their voices are heard, especially in matters concerning young people.

The summit runs from October 15 to 18. Johnson left the island today. (SAT)
