Gonsalves to chair UN Security Council in November

KINGSTOWN – St Vincent and the Grenadines will assume the chairmanship of the United Nations Security Council on Sunday.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the one-month stint is the island’s first and only presidency during the country’s time on the UN Security Council and forms part of the island’s responsibility as a non-permanent member.

“St Vincent and the Grenadines’ presidency of the United Nations Security Council, during the month of November, aims to address contemporary challenges which include pandemics, environmental challenges, climate change and its security consequences and the nexus between development and peace and security,” the Ministry said.

It said that the key events for the month will include a virtual press briefing to be conducted by Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves on Monday.

Gonsalves will one day later chair the UN Security Council Virtual Open Debate under the agenda theme “Peacebuilding and Sustainable Peace: Contemporary Drivers of Conflict and Insecurity”.

On November 4, the UN Security Council will host a meeting of the Police Commissioners of the UN Peacekeeping Missions; intended to highlight issues affecting Haiti.

St Vincent and the Grenadines was official elected as a non-permanent member of the  United Nations Security and officially assumed its position on January 2, 2020 which will run for a period of two years; culminating on December 31, 2021. (CMC)
