Views differ on Lawrence T. Gay reopening

Not everyone is satisfied that Lawrence T. Gay Memorial Primary School is ready for reopening on Tuesday.

Pedro Shepherd, president of the Barbados Union of Teachers, believes the Spooners Hill, St Michael school should remain closed for the rest of the year.

He expressed those views yesterday after a tour, during which special attention was paid to wells and septic tank repairs. Those were believed to be the source of the odours that caused staff and students to fall ill.

After the extensive tour, Minister of Education Santia Bradshaw, who was present, said she was confident most of the issues had been addressed.

“We have had a number of recommendations from the Ministry of Health and they indicated that a number of the odours are not affecting the external community. So we turned our attention back to the school to try to find out if there were any issues with the septic tanks or the wells or the pipes. (TG)
