Shoppers tight-fisted

One week before the biggest holiday of the year, Christmas, Bridgetown merchants are hopeful the foot traffic and sales will increase.

Roadside vendors on St Michael’s Row said business had slowed down considerably, but they were still holding out until the last minute.

Monica Jordan and Margaret Kellman were busy shelling green peas.

“There has been a great demand for the peas. A lot of people didn’t plant this year. . . . We are usually out here on Fridays and Saturdays, but . . .  we will be out here on Wednesday and Thursday before the holiday on Friday. We are getting a few sales in between,” Jordan said.

A few spaces down, Donna John, who has been selling for “a good couple of years”, said prices were a bit higher this year as produce was not as abundant as years gone by. (RA)
