Opening batsman Kraigg Brathwaite could create history by becoming the first West Indian cricketer/horse owner to win a Barbados Derby when the Barbados Turf Club’s stages its first day-night racing card from 1 p.m. at the Garrison Savannah.

His chestnut gelding War Eagle who he co-owns in K and C Stables, is the overwhelming favourite for the Grade I-Barbados Derby over 2 000 metres following.

A piece of history on the 13-race Boxing Day card also awaits his apprentice jockey N’Rico Prescod who was astride when the pair took the Midsummer Creole Classic by 19 lengths. He would become the first apprentice to win a Derby in two consecutive years.

Three-year-old heavyweights War Eagle and Deja Vu have dominated this year’s Classics with two enthralling battles. (LY)
