Aim to alter current highway vending

VENDING AT THE SIDE of the highways could take on a whole new look if president of the Barbados Association of Retailers, Vendors and Entrepreneurs (BARVEN), Alister Alexander, gets his way.

Although he was unable to give a target date, Alexander said with the help of Government, they were hoping for the construction of “rest spots” along highways where vendors now trade goods to motorists, which also causes a high level of convenience to other motorists on a daily basis.

“Some of these things have to go. We want beautifully, aesthetically pleasing set-ups. And these new set-ups will be spearheaded by the Government and the association. It’s not the removal of vending; but you are going to see the enhancement.

“On the highways, there will be rest spot structures built to take the coconut vendors and others off the highway. We want to [make] it clear that all types of vending cannot be allowed on the highway [because of all the] chaos,” Alexander told the DAILY NATION yesterday. (TG)
