While some health professionals are saying it is too soon to speak on the use of the COVID-19 vaccines in Barbados, at least one of them is welcoming them.
Bandele Serrano, chief executive officer of Avis Agencies, yesterday said vaccines had a long history of countering deadly diseases, and this time should not be seen differently.
“It is important Barbados gets the vaccine because, while we cannot kill the virus and will have to live with it, the vaccines can create herd immunity,” he said.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) website, herd immunity, also known as population immunity, is the indirect protection from an infectious disease that happens when a population is immune either through vaccination or immunity developed through previous infection. The site also said the WHO supported achieving herd immunity through vaccination. (CA)
