A brief statement on Facebook said “we mourn his passing . . . but we also celebrate the life of this son of the Bajan soil”.

“Thank you for your contribution Alex.”

Waithe, a former journalist and educator, was the father of Canadian Olympic sprint champion Andre Degrasse.

Former friend Milton Ellis also paid a short tribute to Waithe on Facebook: “Some sad news to share with all, Alex Waithe, my friend and former colleague at radio york 105.5 FM Toronto passed away this morning in Toronto. Alex is the dad of Canadian Olympic sprint champion Andre Degrasse. RIP. Condolences to his family.”

Waithe was known for reports on Canadian radio show Caribbean Connection, where he had a passion for sharing good news about Barbados and the region.
