The International Labour Organisation remains set on its path to eliminate child labour by 2025.

ILO’s regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean Vinicius Pinheiro said now was the time to act with policies to scale up what had already been achieved.

He was speaking during the launch of the International Year For The Elimination of Child Labour In The Americas today with the hashtag #EndChildLabour2021.

The regional initiative between Latin America and the Caribbean, Free of Child Labour, comprises 30 countries, seven employers’ organisations and seven workers’ organisations.

“We must progress and put an end to child labour and we need to speed up. The initiative is a platform that seeks new responses. The ILO maintains a firm commitment to the elimination of child labour in the region. Our goal is at the core of the strategy of decent work. The numbers are dramatic, 2020 means that many children can go back to that situation of child labour,” he said.

Other participants included officials from Colombia, Guatemala, Peru, Costa Rica, and those engaged in Latin America and the Caribbean. (RA)
