Stiffer fines and maybe even jail time are coming for people who continue to flout the COVID-19 protocols.

This was the stern warning from Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes as he dealt with a man caught at a cock fight in St Lucy on Monday.

“You all are not taking this thing seriously,” he declared as he fined Wayne Anthony Clarke $5 000 yesterday.

“These fines will be going up and up and going up. Enough of the nonsense. The level of foolishness that you all continue to do will not be tolerated.”

Clarke, a 46-year-old palletiser, of Cottage Village, St Lucy, had just pleaded guilty to contravening Paragraph 9 of the Emergency Management COVID-19 Protocols Special Curfew No. 3 Directive 2021, in that there being a directive requiring every person to observe such social distancing and associated protocols in the interest of public health imposed from February 3 to 17, he failed to comply by remaining outdoors in a group exceeding five people, as specified in Paragraph 9, who were not members of the same household.
