Family home of 17 destroyed by fire, water damage

Seventeen people are homeless after a house fire which occurred around 12:30 a.m. today.

Police are still at Phillips Road, St Stephen’s Hill, Black Rock, St Michael, where the main structure of a two-storey wood and wall house was destroyed and the rest suffered water damage.

The house has several separate living quarters, each self-contained, according to a statement from police.

The building housed 17 family members, including 11 adults and six children – aged one to 15.

Three fire tenders and 12 personnel responded and extinguished the fire. The property was reported to be insured.

Police are still on scene along with the family members “who are huddled together awaiting assistance for shelter”. (PR/KG)
