National ballers eager to get going

Several senior national footballers are keen on a possible return to action next month after their sport was one of the most heavily affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Barbados’ men’s national team’s preparation for imminent qualifiers for the Concacaf Gold Cup and 2022 FIFA World Cups has stalled, but the players are committed to making the island proud despite the setbacks.

Last March, the Coca-Cola Premier League was suspended after its seventh round of games, following the example of major European leagues, notably in Germany, Netherlands and France, who all cancelled competitions.

As a result, some of the island’s top ballers have not kicked a ball competitively in a year and the hunger to play increases daily, especially with the prospect of a fixture away to Panama in Concacaf World Cup qualification in late March. (NM)
