The Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) is awaiting the outcome of a meeting between Minister of Labour Colin Jordan and management of Preconco Ltd to determine the next step the union would take in the labour issue that developed at the company yesterday.

BWU General Secretary Toni Moore visited the workers outside the Lears Road, Jackmans, St Michael company this morning to discuss the situation.

Moore said the issue was no longer a Preconco workers’ problem but an infringement of trade union laws, making it a legal and national workers’ issue.

She said the situation should not have to develop into a demonstration but she was prepared to rally the members of the union if need be.

Moore said she hoped for a reasonable outcome from the meeting.

She said she is staying outside the site with the workers until the meeting is concluded.

She was accompanied by BWU deputy general secretary Dwaine Paul and other union delegates.

About 85 per cent of the workers at Preconco are off the job and awaiting further instruction.

Yesterday, eight shop stewards were suspended from the company when they returned to work from Solidarity House, where they joined union delegates to take part in a Zoom meeting with Jordan and Chief Labour Officer Claudette Hope-Greenidge.

Management at the company did not attend the meeting. (SB)
