KINGSTOWN, St Vincent – Eloise Gonsalves, the wife of Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, is scheduled to undergo spinal surgery later this month in the United States, for a condition that the country’s leader said last year could put her in a wheelchair.

The Prime Minister said on Wednesday that he and his wife would be travelling on March 17, for two weeks.

“Last September, I went to the USA with Eloise to do all the check-ups and everything and hoping that we could get the operation to her potentially serious problem relating to her spinal condition, but we have just been able to get, recently, the appointment date from the surgeon,” he said.

The Prime Minister said further tests will be done on the Thursday and Friday after their arrival in the US, “and then the following week, on Monday, God willing,… my fingers are crossed that we get the operation done”.

“I have to stay with her for a little while for recuperation and to make sure that she has the requisite support systems,” he added.

Gonsalves noted that on his return to St Vincent and the Grenadines, he would only be in quarantine for seven days as he has already received his two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

The Prime Minister said that while he was overseas he could still work electronically, via Zoom, email and telephone.

“…. So, I will continue to do my work as the circumstances allow, but clearly the priority…is to provide the support for Eloise,” he said. (CMC)
