A 51-year-old Barbadian man was shot and killed in Chicago’s West Side on Sunday morning.

WGN in Chicago says Merlyn McCallister was walking the family dog when he was shot around 7 a.m. His wife of 25 years, Rosie, heard the three shots and went outside to see the dog pacing and her husband lying on the ground.

He was shot in the abdomen.

McCallister was taken to Loyola Hospital where he passed away later that same day.

The couple raised their three children in the North Major district where he was shot.

McCallister migrated from Barbados in 1989 and worked in construction since the 1990s. His wife was puzzled by the incident. She said he did not drink, smoke or do drugs; he worked, helped neighbours and walked the dog.

She appealed to anyone with knowledge of the incident.

A Go Fund Me has been set up to help the family.
