Opposition Leader Bishop Joseph Atherley says Barbados’ current financing model for public health care is unsustainable and needs fixing.
He said so as Minister of Health and Wellness Jeffrey Bostic said Cabinet was reviewing a study on the same issue.
Both spoke yesterday as debate on the 2021-2022 Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure resumed in the House of Assembly after a break on Thursday.
“The current model is not sustainable, the current model will not take us where we need to go, the current model is not properly addressing the immediate problems in the health . . . of Barbados that we now face, and it is not likely to be viable in the face of newer challenges which will come,” Atherley said.
“I have said before, it is my view still, with respect to health in Barbados, we are confronted by the perfect storm. We have the incapacity of the state to subsidise fully and properly health care services in Barbados in a context where we can’t generate revenue, even with respect to the COVID situation. (GBM)
