The doyen of track and field in Barbados passed away on Saturday.

Members of the community are mourning the loss of legendary coach Frank Blackman, who was in his 80s.

Blackman, a former athlete, was a fixture in athletics from the 1960 until the 2000s, first training many of the island’s athletes, including Sydney Olympic Games 100 metres bronze medallist Obadele Thompson, before instructing  them in the fundamentals of coaching.

Blackie, as he was fondly known, spent many years at the Christ Church Foundation School before retiring, returning to assist at Combermere School for a few years.

More to come. (SAT)
