TICAL ROMARIO SMITH told police he had saved up to buy a loaded firearm that cost him $2 400.

He will now have to part with a lot more after the No. 4 Supreme Court slapped him with a total of $40 000 in fines for having the illegal weapon six years ago.

“The prevalence and the ease with which members of the public have access to illegal firearms is of grave concern to right-thinking members of society and it ought to be discouraged,” said Justice Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell.

“We have seen the devastating effects of these intrinsically dangerous weapons to society through the number of deaths due to firearms,” she said. (HLE)
