The volcanic ash is not only harmless to construction, it is actually beneficial, says engineer Grenville Phillips II.

Some Barbadians have taken to social media saying the ash was causing structural damage to homes and roads following the extended ash fall caused by the eruption of La Soufriere volcano in St Vincent.

A video on Facebook entitled Volcanic Ash From St Vincent Has Started To Cause Structural Damage To Houses In Barbados shows someone scooping mounds of wet ash from guttering.

Part of a post on the group page Barbadian Cultural Committee of Boston said: “Barbados has been hampered by La Soufriere volcanic sulphur ash, stone and debris from our neighbouring island of St Vincent and the Grenadines. Homes, businesses and properties have sustained damage from the downpours of ash due to the aftermath of La Soufriere volcano’s eruption.” (CA)

However, Phillips said this was unlikely as the ash was in fact excellent for construction.
