Women nosedive in football rankings

Barbados’ senior women national football team has dropped 15 places down on the international charts.

Following the latest ranking announced by world governing body FIFA, the Lady Tridents fell from No.123 to 138 with 1002 points, just above Caribbean neighbours Bermuda, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines.

However, while acknowledging a cause for concern, president of the Barbados Football Association (BFA) Randy Harris said COVID-19 has heavily impacted on playing opportunities for the team.

The women’s squad has been inactive for two years, after being defeated by Jamaica 7-0 in the women’s Olympic qualifying campaign in October 2019. Their last victory came in the same competition when they defeated St Lucia 3-2. (AGB)
