HUNDREDS OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS who took part in Operation Seek And Save during a deadly second wave of COVID-19 were hailed for their bravery and volunteerism on Monday.

The more than 400 students who were part of The University of the West Indies’ (UWI) give-back programme did so at a time when Barbados was grappling with an explosion of COVID-19 cases which turned deadly, as did the rise in dengue fever cases. The volunteerism continued into the vaccination programme.

During Operation Seek And Save, the students traversed the island from February collecting information from residents intended, among other things, to identify the vulnerable and threats.

Leading the tributes in the COVID-19 student volunteer appreciation ceremony of the Cave Hill Campus were Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley and retiring principal, Professor The Most Honourable Eudine Barriteau.

“Barbados recognises that it was nothing short of bravery, sheer bravery which you exhibited by volunteering to participate in the UWI/Government of Barbados Community Evaluation and Testing project,” Barriteau said during the virtual event. (AC)
