The arrivals hall of the Grantley Adams International Airport was busy this afternoon when three flights from international airlines arrived, including Air Canada, which restarted passenger flights to Barbados following a four-month suspension.

Air Canada arrived at 1:56 p.m. from Toronto, JetBlue Airways came in at 1:57 p.m. from New York and American Airlines was scheduled to touch down at 1:55 p.m. from Miami.

It took well over an hour before travellers started to trickle out of the hall.

At the end of January, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Air Canada, WestJet, Sunwing and Air Transat had agreed to suspend their services to sun destinations until April 30 in order to curb the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

Barbados’ representative for Air Canada Vacations, Nigel Evason, said Barbadians could expect more visitors on a weekly basis.

“This is the first inbound flight,” he said. “They have been operating on Sundays but just bringing cargo and then carrying people from Barbados back to Canada who have been here for the winter. (SB)
