Body of slain police officer Newton Lewis lying in repose

The body of slain police officer Newton Lewis was lying in repose at the Police Sports Club, Weymouth, St Michael, from 3 p.m. today, allowing his colleagues, friends and the public to pay their last respects.

Lewis, 46, was shot while responding to an attempted robbery on May 22 in his neighbourhood of Rose Hill, St Peter.

The former acting station sergeant was the personal driver for Commissioner of Police Tyrone Griffith.

Lewis was reported to have encountered a group of armed men who were attempting a robbery at a shop in the area.

Many people were waiting in line to get a glimpse of the fallen officer.

The funeral for Lewis takes place on Tuesday at the chapel of Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Hall, St Peter before he is laid to rest in Casuarina Lawns.

He will be accorded full military honours.
