Police are continuing investigations into the suspected drowning of a 74-year-old woman from Britain.

A statement from police said that officers were summoned to a scene at Paynes Bay, St James about 1:30 p.m. on Monday.

“A group of workmen who were working on the roadway reported that they had seen an elderly Caucasian woman cross the road and went onto the sea shore. Whilst on the sand, she took off a bedsheet which was wrapped around her. She then walked naked into the sea. She fell face first into the water and her body floated in the water as the tide took her about 200 metres out to sea,” according to the statement.

The Barbados Coast Guard was summoned and officers recovered the body from the water and brought it ashore. A doctor pronounced death at the scene.

The deceased woman was staying at an apartment located at Chapel Gap #1, Paynes Bay, St James.

Police have chosen to withhold the name until family members have been informed. (PR)
