Despite Barbadians being permitted to resume Sunday shopping, some of the major supermarkets kept their doors shut yesterday.

While the automarts at gas stations were bustling with customers, some supermarket operators said they wanted another week to get ready for the resumption of Sunday business.

Due to COVID-19 protocols, supermarkets and shops had been closed on Sundays for months but two weeks ago, Minister of Home Affairs Wilfred Abrahams announced a new COVID-19 Directive (No 11) – in effect from June 8 to 29 – permitting the resumption of Sunday shopping from yesterday.

Andrew Bynoe, managing director of A1 Supermarkets, comprising Carlton in Black Rock, St Michael and Emerald City in Six Roads, St Philip – said they would reopen next Sunday. (CA)
