Put the union first!

That is the advice of acting general secretary Wayne Walrond to members of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) ahead of tomorrow’s special meeting to vote for president Akanni McDowall to be installed as secretary general.

Amidst what he called “aggressive campaigning”, Walrond said he expected members to respect the institution of the trade union.

“The union comes first. Members have to say in any action [that] we are putting the union first and that is what I would like to see.

“What is important is the union, its image and respect for structure. Any deviation can be deemed to be a disregard for the structure and can adversely impact on the union,” he said.
