Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley last night thanked her lucky stars that no lives were lost, nor serious injuries sustained after a “freak system” in the wee hours of yesterday left scores of rural Barbadians homeless, and houses flooded.
From St Peter to St John, roofs were blown away and scientists were left shaking their heads in amazement.
Mottley is now hoping Barbadians will take the opportunity to make sure they have all measures in place for the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season, noting it was clear anything could happen at a moment’s notice.
The system, which was not categorised as a storm or hurricane by the Barbados Meteorological Service, did most of its damage just after midnight, affecting mostly central and some northern areas for about 90 minutes. It dumped almost six inches of rain, accompanied by storm-force winds which reached up to 40 kilometres per hour.
Met officials said the system then headed towards St Vincent and the Grenadines, where it also drenched that island chain. (BA)
