Tropical Storm Elsa moves closer

Barbados Meteorological Services issued a Tropical Storm warning at 5 a.m.

A tropical-storm warning is issued when sustained winds of 34 to 63 knots (39 – 73 mph; 63 – 118kmh) associated with a tropical storm or hurricane are forecast to affect Barbados within 36 hours.

At 5 a.m., the centre of Tropical Storm Elsa was located near latitude 12.7N longitude 58.6W or about 70 MI (110 KM) eastsoutheast of Barbados. Maximum sustained winds are near 60 MPH or 95 KM/H with higher gusts.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles (220 km) mainly to the north of the center.

Over the last few hours, wind speeds have increased across the island. Elsa is currently moving towards the west-northwest (290 degrees) at 28 MPH (44 KM/H).

This motion is expected to continue during the next few days. On its current forecast track, the centre of tropical storm Elsa should pass about 20 miles (33 km) to the south of Barbados Friday morning. Rainfall accumulations of six to eight inches are forecast across Barbados on Friday.

A flash-flood warning is currently in effect for Barbados.

The next advisory will be issued at 8 a.m.
