Loan scheme plan for digital tools

A loan scheme for digital devices is in the work, says Prime Minister Mia Mottley. It is similar to the textbook loan scheme in secondary schools.

She made that announcement during yesterday’s naming ceremony of the Owen Arthur CARICOM Research Complex at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus.

“There is no doubt that we have to deal with the digital divide and we have to do so collectively by ensuring we treat to the provisions of devices for our children in a way that is sustainable, in the same [way] we did for the provision of textbooks in secondary schools.

“We are now seeking to work with the telecommunications companies in the region, as well as other individual governments and persons outside of the region, to ensure we can provide access to our children on an affordable basis that will allow us to treat to a model scheme just as we did with the textbook loan where people have access,” Mottley said.
