Some vendors who ply their trade near the Cheapside van stand, The City, are at loggerheads with the president of the Barbados Association of Vendors, Retailers and Entrepreneurs (BARVEN), Alister Alexander, over the fencing in of their usual spot at Cheapside, St Michael.
“We knew from last week that the area was fenced ’round, so as early as 5:15 a.m. today [yesterday] we came and set up in the old BARVEN market (next door to Shop Smart) since we didn’t have anywhere else to go and sell,” one vendor said.
“The police came after 7 a.m. and told us we could no longer sell here as this was still BARVEN’s property and we explained that we are BARVEN members. The officer said he would call Alexander and up to now Alexander hasn’t come to see what is going on with us or why we had to come here in the first place to sell. He is supposed to represent us.”
The group was allowed to continue selling after another officer informed them they could use the area once they were socially distanced. (SB)
