Tapper captures hurdles bronze

TOKYO, Japan – Jamaican Megan Tapper clinched bronze in the women’s sprint hurdles at the Tokyo Olympics.

The 27-year-old clocked 12.55 seconds running out of lane nine on Monday, as Puerto Rican Jasmine Camacho-Quinn took gold in 12.37 and American Kendra Harrison, silver in 12.52.

Tapper’s compatriot Britany Anderson finished last in 13.24.

In the marquee women’s 200 metres, newly crowned repeat 100 metres champion, Elaine Thompson-Herah remained on course for a second straight Olympic sprint double by cruising comfortably into the final.

Thompson-Herah was third in heat six of the opening round of 22.86 seconds but really turned it on in the second round to post a personal best 21.66 and capture semi-final two.

Her main threat in the final, countrywoman Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, signaled her quality with a clocking of 22.13 to win semi-final one, with Bahamian Anthonique Strachan third in 22.56.

Fraser-Pryce had earlier won heat two of the opening round in 22.22 while Strachan had taken heat five in a season-best 22.76.

Bahamian Shaunae Miller-Uibo, who also won her opening round heat in 22.40, finished second in semi-final three in 22.14, to also clinch her spot in Tuesday’s final carded for 8:50 p.m. Eastern Caribbean time. (CMC)
