River dam project under way

Work has begun at River Plantation in St Philip to rectify the water problem farmers have been facing.

For several years, they have complained about being unable to access sufficient water from nearby Brown’s Pond to irrigate their fields.

The complaints intensified in April when farmers reported their crops were dying as the level at the pond was so low that they could not pump water for seven consecutive days.

Subsequently, representatives of the Barbados Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (BADMC) met with the farmers, promising that a $6 million dam project would soon bring relief.

On Thursday, project supervisor at C.O. Williams Construction, Raneil Smith, said that work started in May. (SB)
