AOPT pushing for review of fuel tax

The Alliance Owners of Public Transport (AOPT) is calling for a review of taxes on fuel or they will join in should there be a national protest against the most recent hike in fuel prices in Barbados.

AOPT information, communications and marketing officer Mark A Haynes said gas prices, especially diesel, were “astronomical” and something had to be done.

“The PSV sector is under enormous stress as it struggles to survive as it grapples with other miscellaneous costs. This situation is not only unsustainable in this current environment but also most untenable, and cannot continue unabated. I therefore call on the Government of Barbados to move with alacrity to address this most vexing and worrying situation by adjusting the taxation policy, specifically in relation to gas products at the pump,” he said yesterday.

Haynes said an adjustment could be made in both the Value Added and Excise Taxes, “thus providing an ease or to ameliorate the overall cost to the PSV sector and to all Barbadians by extension.” (CA)
