Barbados now has the capacity to produce a world-class asphalt mix that will make its roads last longer and be less susceptible to crocodile (large) cracking.
During a tour yesterday of the lone asphalt plant in Barbados, Asphalt Processors Incorporated (API), at Lower Greys, Christ Church, managing director Errol Lynch said this was an important milestone nationally and regionally, which would put local and regional roads on a similar footing to international ones.
“As a result of the most recent improvements to our manufacturing plant, we are now additionally fully equipped to not only produce, but to rigorously test, a performance grade bitumen called Polymer Modified Asphalt,” he said. “This grade of asphalt incorporates distinct ingredients and is tested in such a way to add significantly increased strength, safety and durability to the life of a road.
“Aside from being internationally recognised as one of the highest grades of asphalt, Polymer Modified Asphalt is in fact the most cost-effective and environmentally safe approach to road paving and preventative maintenance and construction of all major highways.” (SB)
