The multipurpose Wildey Gymnasium of the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex could be in for a major upgrade to the tune of almost half-million dollars.

Minister of Sports Dwight Sutherland revealed this on Thursday evening after National Hero, The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers was given the Lifetime Achievement Award and inducted into the Cricket Hall of Fame in Connecticut during a brief ceremony at the venue.

“We believe this institution should be one of the most revered in the Caribbean and the world, so we have taken it upon ourselves to invest close to $500 000 to make this facility one that is recognised as the home of international conferences and semi-professional tournaments to maximise the true economic potential of sport at this facility,” Sutherland said.

Over the years, the Wildey Gymnasium, which was opened in November 1992, has been the venue for several regional championships ranging from basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, netball to boxing. (NM)
