Online classes hurt uniform rush

Bridgetown businesses continue to lament that the traditional back-to-school rush for school uniforms and supplies has been put on brakes, with the announcement of a return to online classes.

A number of stores which typically experience bumper sales during this time of year, reported that things have slowed down since Tuesday’s e-learning announcement by Minister of Education Santia Bradshaw, which came after a spike in COVID-19 cases among children.

Representative of Shoe Masters Ltd (Thani’s Shoe Shop) on Swan Street, Calva Williams, said they had spent a lot on inventory in anticipation of the rush, and even had special incentives where children could get free shoes or electronic devices.

“We had stock up on a lot of the brands people usually look for and we were hoping to have good sales, but as soon as the announcement was made, things just went dead. Some customers had even called asking if they could return items.”
