Diver admits to drug offences

The Jamaican fisherman whose diving skills were pressed into action to check on a container of drugs bolted to the hull of a cargo ship will know his punishment on Friday.

George Washington Williams, 53, of Charlston Road, Cumberland, Jamaica, but who was staying at 1st Avenue Accommodation Road, Bush Hall, St Michael, was back before the No. 2 Supreme Court yesterday where he had pleaded guilty to engaging in preparatory acts for the purpose of trafficking in cannabis, as well as conspiring with another person to traffic in cannabis on December 20, 2018.

“I am very sorry I commit this offence and I promise myself I would never do something like this again,” he told the court.

His attorney, Simon Clarke, in mitigation, pointed to Williams’ cooperation with investigators and the fact that the drugs were recovered. (HLE)
