Davis Cup tie in limbo

Barbados’ home Davis Cup tennis tie against Indonesia is now at the mercy of Government
after new COVID-19 protocols have prohibited the playing of all contact and team sports.

Local tennis officials say they are awaiting word from health authorities and the COVID-19 Monitoring Unit to determine if next week’s matches (September 17 and 18) at the National Tennis Centre will go ahead as planned.

The island’s top players, Darian King, Haydn Lewis, Matthew Foster-Estwick, Kaipo Marshall and Stephen Slocombe are set to do battle in a five-match series – four singles and a doubles game.

“The COVID-19 Monitoring Unit is aware of the event; we are not going under any radar or anything. We have reached out to them to get some sort of clarification and they haven’t come back to us as yet but they have not said no. We are still waiting to hear from them officially,” coach Damien Applewhaite told Saturday Sport yesterday during a telephone interview.
