‘Be honest’ with workers

An attorney has called on Barbados’ employers to give employees an “honest” reason to get vaccinated against COVID-19 instead of making the claim that it was intended to protect workers’ health and safety.

“You have to be honest and change the conversation from just health and safety, because if it was health and safety, you would care about the mental health effects of this coercion talk,” said Michelle Russell, who was participating in a Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association webinar on Wednesday on the topic Vaccination In Tourism: Is It A Choice?

“The reality is, to survive, the economy needs a large portion of the people vaccinated,” she added.

She contended that telling employees if they were not vaccinated they could not be employed was “a form of coercion”, adding this was contrary to conditions contained in a World Health Organisation document addressing the issue of COVID-19 mandatory vaccination.
