Small team for Utah Senior Games

The COVID-19 pandemic has dealt a cruel blow to Barbados’ participation at the Senior Games in Utah, United States, with just two athletes and a coach leaving the island yesterday for the games, which will run to October 16.

Four-time competitor Roland Waithe and first-timer Betty Ann Murray, along with coach former Olympian Rawle Clarke, make up the team. The contingent is a far cry from the 20-plus athletes and Government officials who have been representing Barbados over the past decade.

“The covid has affected our training, where in spite of programmes outlined by our coach and with some persons helping out at training at Weymouth, we are only about 80 per cent. We were trying to cram six to eight months training into two months,” Waithe said.

“I have done well in the past in the 200, where I won gold in 2016, and in spite of the small team I expect that Betty and I shall perform well. Betty will run the 50, 100 and 200.” (KB)
