It’s a new era, says Wickham

John King’s announcement that he will not be seeking re-election represents a new era in local politics, says political scientist Peter Wickham.

However, Democratic Labour Party leader Verla De Peiza said the move was an indictment on the leadership of the ruling Barbados Labour Party (BLP).

King, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office with responsibility for Culture, revealed his intentions on Sunday during a BLP meeting at Gordon Walters Primary School.

He is the second minister in the last three weeks, following Minister of Health and Wellness Jeffrey Bostic in The City of Bridgetown, to announce a departure from elective politics.

“At the general level, it means the BLP is clearly preparing its slate and identifying candidates who, after one term in office, have determined that representational politics is not for them,” Wickham said yesterday.
