Members of the House of Assembly and the Senate today in a separate ballot, voted Governor General Dame Sandra Mason to be Barbados’ first President on November 30, 2021.

Those in the House of Assembly voted 27-0 and the Senate 18-0.

There was one unreturned ballot from the Upper House, that of Senator Caswell Franklyn, who earlier voiced his opposition to the process and left during the historic meeting at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.

The election of Dame Sandra will officially end the tenure of Queen Elizabeth II as head of state of Barbados.

November 30, traditionally Independence Day, will also be Republic Day in Barbados. (AR)
